Summer is when the garden demands the most attention, and the two habits that matter most are watering and mulching. Get those right and the heat becomes manageable.

Consistent deep watering keeps plants from stress, while mulch locks the moisture in and cools the roots. Together they turn a punishing season into a productive one.

  • Water deeply in the early morning
  • Apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch around plants
  • Mulch keeps soil cooler and weeds down
  • Check moisture at root level, not the surface

Establish the watering and mulching routine early in summer, before the worst heat arrives.
