Starting a vegetable garden feels like a big project, but the first season only needs a sunny spot, decent soil, and a few forgiving crops. Most beginner failures come from starting too large, not from a lack of skill.

Pick a location that gets at least six hours of sun and start with a small plot or raised bed. Three or four easy vegetables will teach you more than a dozen that overwhelm you.

  • Choose a spot with 6 to 8 hours of direct sun
  • Start with a 4 by 8 foot bed, nothing bigger
  • Begin with lettuce, tomatoes, and bush beans
  • Improve the soil with compost before planting
